  • TERNEUZEN TOWER

The design for the new panoramic tower for Terneuzen forms a recognizable silhouette for the city. The combination of its stairwell and panorama deck form the symbolic shape of a capital T from all directions. A wide walkway connects the triangular stair shaft to the basalt stone pier. The staircase leads to the Y-shaped panorama deck that owes its orientation to the vistas over the sailing routes over the River Schelde and the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal, its arms indicating the direction to Antwerp, Ghent and the North Sea. These routes give the city its significance on a regional scale, a dynamic hub of international importance and significance. The nautical context is an important dictator for the architecture of the tower. A significant black exo-skeleton creates a strong relationship with maritime-industrial objects along the Canal Zone, such as the bridges over the Westsluis, the Ovet crane and the Sluiskil bridge.
