  • BAK 2.0

In the historic city centre of Utrecht the former multicultural music centre RASA will be transformed to be the new BAK (Basis voor Actuele Kunst) art centre. To emphasize this transfiguration both conceptually and functionally, a series of strategically positioned sliding doors are placed in the interior. They enhance and complement the various spaces in the building as well as augment a flexible usage. Additionally, the sliding walls serve as an extension of the walls of the art institution; a canvas for art of all sorts. Strong adaptations to both the front and rear façade minimize detail and raise a certain neutrality in the buildings appearance. The new entrance is marked by a singular, grand sliding door. This combination of alterations enlarges the adaptive quality of the building, guaranteeing variety of usage for it’s future occupants. Exactly this capacity to adapt is what expresses the identity of the new BAK.
