  • ART PAVILION M

Art pavilion M is a precursor to the new art museum that is to be built in Almere within the coming decennium. It will facilitate the testing of new ideas and installations, before establishing a permanent art museum. Located at the heart of the world horticultural exhibition Floriade expo 2022, the site will be subsequently developed into ‘Hortus’, an innovative, sustainable residential area, with the art pavilion as a key attractor. Three circles -floating on the water – make up the ensemble of a ring-shaped promenade, an outside terrace, and a round pavilion. The route towards- , and through the pavilion offers a layered experience of the surrounding elements by combining movement and observation, both indoors and outdoors. This relation with the landscape is further addressed by a variety of terrazzo in the promenade and pavilion floor in which various shells, mussels, clay and stones from the Flevoland landscape are embedded. A cylindrical polycarbonate façade filters and reflects the hues of the water and greenery. Series of carefully designed and positioned window openings cast through visitors’ silhouettes, while making the building function as a sundial. A curtain that incorporates similar openings allows for a diverse use of the exhibition space, and allows for different interpretations of the building during day and night time.
